Just a quick note to clarify the medals debate. John Kerry did not put himself in for the medals. All applications have to have a thorough description of the heroic acts which have to be signed by the company officers that viewed them. Medals were not given out freely in Vietnam. As a clerk typist in a combat unit in Vietnam, I typed the paperwork for these medals. Many were rejected and few were awarded. Purple hearts were a different story.
