Fred,
Two methods of removing the adhesive come to mind. Heat from a hair dryer  or 
heat gun will soften the glue and make it easy to wipe up. I've also had  
success with WD-40. Let it soak a while and then wipe clean.
If all else fails, a very quick wipe with acetone will certainly remove  
it......and possibly the paint from the cover. :)
