The PVC tubing will make all the difference in the world for your problem. 
The only times mine gets hung up is in almost still air conditions where I'm 
actually the line and sail through to the other side.
The previous owner of my boat changed out the sheets with 1/2 inch lines and 
replaced the blocks which lines up perfectly with the old holes. I find the 
larger size line much easier to handle under Xtreme conditions and especially 
when the winch handle is used.
