Bill,
I can tell you that yes, the battened main sail adds speed compared to the  
non-battened IMF. Bob Keller and I have sailed a lot together and about the 
only  difference between our boats is the centerboard and the main sail. His boat 
has  the non-battened IMF and the newer style centerboard.
