Dean,
I'm a charter member of the R22 extreme team, so take my advice with a bit  
of caution. My first reef is to always bring the 175 in to about a 150. If I  
need to reduce sail more, I will lower the pop top and drop the boom to the  
lower position. From there I can adjust the genoa as needed for balance. Rarely  
do I furl the main sail. Beyond that I might as well pull all the sails in 
and  find a nice quiet cove to drink in.
