It's been a while since I replaced mine, but I believe it was 1" PVC pipe.  
The cap is a standard plumbing cap with a hole driller through it and glued to  
the pipe. I don't recall the size of the hole either.....sorry. The next time 
I  replace mine I'll write a detailed account. It wasn't difficult to do.
