There was only one reason young men joined the National Guard in those days  
and it wasn't because they looked good in a uniform. I wouldn't call them 
draft  dodgers, but it removed them from harms way and we all know people in high  
places used political connections to get their kids in the guard. Something 
that  wasn't available to the underprivileged.
