Mark,
Bill is entitled to his opinions, but the majority of the list members will  
tell you as well as most technical articles on anchoring that the chain is  
necessary. I went from three feet or chain to six feet and doubled my holding  
ability on a red clay bottom lake.
I also agree with Mary Lou, that keeping a wet anchor line inside is not a  
good idea.
