Ben,
Ballistic evidence is usually taken shortly after a crime has been committed.
The criminals usually dispose of the gun and or rarely shoot it again.
Besides, they aren't known for being smart enough to clean a weapon.
The grooves in a barrel are call rifling, thus the difference between a rifle
and a shotgun which has a smooth barrel.
