Ed,
You are correct that there have been warming and cooling trends in the  past. 
They were obviously caused by natural occurring events such as a meteor  
strike or volcanic eruptions, but never has there been such a rapid change in  
global temperature. The changes, although small in degrees has been the fastest  
ever recorded.
