Bruce, Replacing the main sail is a very easy task. You are correct to remove the boom. The trick to the whole thing is to get the correct number of wraps back on the furling line before you raise the mast. Try retrieving and letting out the main sail while still lowered. Do it several times to make sure the wraps are correct. Other than cleaning the round bearings with mile soap and water, there isn't much to do.
