Try motoring around in circles on a fairly strong wind day. That should  
clear the webs from your wind indicator. To keep them off is another problem.  
I've been told and have used WD-40 successfully for several years. Just spray  
the area with plenty of WD-40 and that will discourage them from  rebuilding.
Let us know how going to the top of the mast goes. The former owner of your  
boat, Rodger, climbed that mast on several occasions, without a bosun's chair, 
 just bare feet.
