Hank,
I use the six pack method to raise and lower my mast. That's in six pack of  
beer to get a neighbor to help me. Two people can raise the lower the mast  
without the crane system, but it's not as convenient because you are at the  
mercy of your helper being able to help when you need him.
I always lower the mast to the bow. I use the traveler like a trapeze to  
walk the mast forward. My helper guides and helps to lower the mast to the front  
pulpit. Raising it is in reverse.
