Mike,
Anything to stop corrosion on your stays is good preventative maintenance.  
If you are going to wax the stays at the fittings, simply make sure they are  
dry. Apply a little heat if your concerned. Wax, especially bees wax is a great 
 sealer. It keeps honey fresh for hundreds of years.
