Brad, 
You are fighting two different types of squirrels. The nocturnal squirrels  
are the flying squirrel variety. Shooting daytime squirrels won't get rid of  
them.

Actually, I wouldn't mind having another cat.  My farm  cat was with me for
about 12 years (10 years ago) and finally missed a step  in old age crossing
the road.  He was mean as a snake to my dogs at  the time, a yellow lab and a
golden retriever, and they gave him a wide  berth. Unless of course it was
cold, then he wanted to snuggle and be their  best buddy.  Tonight will be
the test to see if today's kill had a  domestic partner. About midnight seems
to be the most active period for my  attic "pets".
