Speaking from first hand experience, I can assure you that when laid over,  
the sink drain is indeed in the water. I do not know if it would allow water  
into the cabin because it would depend on the height of the sink at that angle. 
 My guess would be that the water came in from the hull/deck joint. It's an 
easy  thing to fix. Once again, it's been covered many times on this list, but 
if you  can't find anything in the archives, I will be glad to repeat the 
instructions I  got from Sir Stanley.
Another source of water could be your water tank. It has an air valve that  
could let water out when laid over. Do you know if the water in the bilge was  
salt water or fresh water?????

Backflow through the sink is possible as it is open, but the  increased
flotation when the flare is in the water would probably still  keep the drain
at some height above the  water.
