main sail outhaul

Jon,
Welcome to the list. Over the years there has been several different  
configurations for the outhaul. They all work about the same way, but the  
hardware differs. If you have any pictures of your hardware and configuration it  
would be easier to answer your question. General Boats has made many  
improvements over the years and digital photos are easy to take and post to the  
list. As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words.

the traveller wheel  orientation for and aft make a difference? And  
does it sit free in  the boom, or is intended to be attached to the  
mainsail  clew?
