Mary Lou,
I think the fish finder is possibly the best depth finder you can have.
Knowing the contour and also being able to find the fish is sometimes
important when the wind dies. I can't remember ever seeing a barge on Lake
Hartwell. I suppose it could happen, but I haven't drank enough rum yet to see one.
Pink elephants are a common site on our lake.

It's been a long time since I've made this comment but I will put it
out there again for those who have never seen it. For the rest this
will sound like a broken record. The "centerboard depth sounder" is
all well and good and in fact works better than a lazarette mounted
depth sounder IF all you want to do is keep from running aground.
However a depth sounder has many more uses and for these other uses,
it doesn't matter where it is located - it can be forward under the
head, in the lazarette or where ours is located - on the transom. Our
favorite uses for our depth sounder are: to see what the depth is
where we plan to anchor and for navigating - knowing when you are in
or out of a dredged channel, working your way down a coast or around
a point by keeping to a specific depth contour on a chart, making a
turn for a mark when you cross into a specific depth in order to
avoid a hazard, trying to figure out if that barge that is way out of
the channel will have to turn or run aground before he gets to where
you are - and because ours is a fishfinder - seeing the bottom
contours. If we had it programmed to do so, we could even see if
there were fish below but we don't. On the Chesapeake, we are rarely
concerned about running aground but we are always navigating and use
the depth sounder constantly.
