Joe,
Which version of the motor lift do you have? If you have the new electric  
lift you can get the longest length and won't have to worry about drag. The 
lift  tilts the motor just before it's done lifting.

Longer shaft will cavitate less in rough seas under power.   OTOH,  
longer shaft may drag the prop in the water when heeled over  to port  
under sail.
