Also, why bother taping it? Again, you are over thinking this. Tape will
become sticky and disintegrate long before the foam insulation will. It's
simply a waste of time and effort. Just shove the up in the slot with the
wires inside it and forget about it.

Thanks Rummy!

I slept on the problem and first I'm going to try easing a 1 x 2" or a bit
of skin-and-frame kayak rib stock (roughly 1/4 by 1 1/4) up from below. If
the cabling passes in front of the spreader bolt I may be able to ease the
insulation over it and just keep adding sections from below. If the
cabling
passes behind the bolt then I'll either have to remove it temporarily or do
as you suggest (which is what I'll try next).

Adding them from above is a good idea, but the radio antenna cable "comes
out" of the mast pretty far from the end (about 8") and I'm worried about
coaxing the insulation around it from the top. Plus, from below there's
enough space that I was able to tape around the insulation and did so about
every two feet. That's probably way overkill and I'll probably start to
find shedded tape pieces in about 15 years falling inside the mast, but it
seemed like a good idea at the time.

I'll let you know how it works out.

Today I'm also replacing the rudder tiller with one from Stan; mine was
about to give out due to rot at the bolt hole between the rudder "cheeks".
Also on the list is to get Muireann's new Garmin GPS/depth finder
installed.
We're getting ready for a two week trip to the Outer Banks! One week
cruising the sound side of the barrier islands and one week with family in
a
house at Kitty Hawk with frequent day sailing I hope.
