John,
That makes sense to me. I was trying to figure out any down sides to adding 
 hardware on the clew and it makes sense that it could become a weapon and 
do  damage to flesh as well as fiberglass.

jib.   When the wind is up and there is any slack in the jib 
somebody/something will  get slapped hard with that shackle when the wind whips it  around.
