August would bite down into the water and several times each summer she  
would come back up with a fish in her mouth. Then she would carry it up onto 
the  beach and drop it on the sand and then back into the water. Of course we 
rescued  the poor fish. She would wear herself out chasing fish all day and 
sleep on the  way home.

Barnaby was a really sweet dog--never even growled at anything  in all his 
14 years. He was 3/8th shepherd (most people called him a shepherd)  1/4 
malamute, 1/4 golden & 1/8 wolf. I owned his father, Peyote  (pronounced 
Pie-oat) & bred him. Peyote was shepherd and 1/4 wolf. You  couldn't keep Peyote 
out of the water. We once made a swim together across a  wide inlet--I had a 
friend row along in case he got exhausted. Coming back  from CA through Utah 
I stopped by a very fast river--nearly white water--and  opened the door to 
let him pee. Bang--straight into the river. I thought I'd  lost him, but he 
just paddled along and gradually worked his way to shore  about 1/4 mile 
further on. Not even slightly worried! & he always kept his  paws below the 
surface--just sort of calmly cruised.

I'm glad to hear  the nails were not an issue. Gets me that much closer to 
finding another  rescued dog. Except for Barnaby, all my dogs (all shepherds 
or shepherd mixes)  since 1979 have been strays I found. Or who found me.

I don't  remember having any issues with dog nails doing damage. Our dog   
spent most of her time on the foredeck waiting for us to get close enough  
to  
land for her to jump off. It was a constant battle. She just  enjoyed 
swimming  and chasing fish. It was the same problem on the  Hobie also. She 
was a 
great  sailor, but loved the  water.

I have a great little long-haired  Chiuhuahua-Papillon mix I  found at 
animal rescue for my mother (who died in  2006). 100% dog.  Not a drop of 
squeaky-toy blood in his veins. To my  amazement,  Carlos loves sailing.

We  tried the doggy vest with the handle on top, but our  lab/springer  mix 

didn't really like it. We found out she could use  our  stern ladder by 
simply  
putting our hand behind her head as  she  climbed up for support. She also 
liked  climbing and going  down  slides at the children's park. :)

Thanks for the warning.   It's certainly a   consideration.  Our jackets 
are 
intended  to float them until we  can  retrieve them, which hopefully would 

not be a long time.   I've been  looking at underdog vests,  which is along 
the 
lines of  what your vet  suggests.   Pricier, but probably worth it.

Guys,

Got this from my   vet:

Please  when you get a life jacket for your dog get one that  will  support 

his head from UNDER the head. Dogs can paddle for  quite a while but   they 
become fatigued holding their heads up  and drown when they can no  longer  
do so.

Not something  we necessarily think   about.
