Old style furler question

It's a bearing for the furler. And it's not so funny if you lose it.

forestay below the drum. Anybody know what this is for? My boat is a 77  and
has old school furler that is basically just an aluminum pipe around  the
forestay with genoa that has a luff that slides over that tube.  Thanks,
