I do the same. There was a tang that was originally welded to the pintle,  
but it has been gone for many years. A small hose clamp has worked fine for  
years.

Your rudder should be tethered to the boat and secured in such  a way that 
it will pop off the pintle should you have a hard  grounding.
Better the rudder pop-off than the transom get  damaged.
