The simple solution is to replace the sail. Having the IMF is a feature
which, if not working properly, totally negates the entire idea of having one
in the first place.
Pulling the main out requires both hands. One on the outhaul and the other
keeping pressure on the inhaul. I usually pull the main out while the motor
is still running to keep me into the wind. I steer the boat with my butt
against the tiller handle if needed. Usually you don't need much steering if
the sail comes out as advertised. Once the main is out I shut the engine
off, fall off the wind and then the genny comes out. Tah Dah.
Simple solution...replace the main sail.

i know it's a small boat for an auto pilot but i have a partner who is
just learning to sail and wants to go out on his own. he has a hard time
keeping it into the wind when he's hauling out the outhaul which is a struggle
because our imf main jams all the time (previous owner apparently stored the
mast with the sun shining on the part of the main which is exposed when
furled, the leech. It rotted an had to have a leech long patch which made it
thicker) ,Does anyone else out there use an autopilot? There's a Raymark
tiller unit for about $450. it looks to be the best choice unless someone has
a better idea
