Graham, It will serve no purpose to add additional layers of glass, either inside or out. Rummy In a message dated 12/20/2013 8:43:02 P.M. Presumably it would be much easier to do and I would, presumably, get a better bond on the inside where I could rough up the old surface pretty thoroughly. It may also be that once I reinstall the main bulkhead, that alone will strengthen the hull sufficiently as it sits very close to where the indentation was. I don't want to do this work if it serves no real purpose, or creates other problems, so your advice and experience is welcome. It's been discussed many times over the years and the consensus was to not add additional fiberglass and weight to the hull. It's not a big deal once you get it off the trailer. It simply goes away. A couple of years ago a Rhodes owner had his hull sand blasted in preparation for a new bottom coat and anti-fouling. In the process they discovered that this hull had been glassed over as you are thinking of doing. It delaminated and they tore the whole mess off the boat. It added hours of needless repairs and cost to the project. Rummy In a message dated 12/20/2013 2:06:01 P.M. It seems like the opportune time to do so if it is worthwhile and if I had some idea of what was needed. It would only be feasible to do the main cabin and possible the forward area if I remove the foam. I am not sure how the foam is held in place and how I would reattach it. Has anyone done this or do they have any technical thoughts about how many layers of fibreglass should be added? Is it really worth the effort? The reasons I am thinking about this is that I understand that later boats have a heavier layup and I assume there was a good reason for that and because the hull seems overly flexible and has taken a dent where the forward starboard strut of the trailer presses on the hull. I jacked the boat up about 2 years ago and most of the dent has come out, but I thought that some strengthening - perhaps with strengthening ribs of some sort might be prevent the impression from forming again when the boat is lowered back on the bunk. I would value thought from those who might know more about whether and/or how to proceed. -----Original Message----- From: rhodes22-list-bounces at rhodes22.org [mailto:rhodes22-list-bounces at rhodes22.org] On Behalf Of Lou Rosenberg Sent: December-20-13 1:24 PM To: rhodes22-list at rhodes22.org Subject: Re: [Rhodes22-list] Centerboard replacement. James, I renovated my '81 centerboard trunk and mechanism. While its a totally different design than what you have in front of you, I recommend trying to re create what Stan had in that era of R22s. Try to create a two piece (cap and flange ) system with a recessed "V" inside your trunk to hold the pivot pin. If for some reason you have no access to pics of this, I can supply some directly to you. I have documented my renovation in the Owner's site in the section under technical details I believe. Roger Pihlaja did most of the writing on the structural details of the cement and glass work. I followed his online instructions and did the job alone. I took one year of hard labor but it was worth it. Since then I ve re lined my centerboard cap and flange with Garolite (1/4") to make a firm seal. I have not had any issues since but am very curious to know how far you took your restoration of the hull. I plan to add stringers under my cockpit and remove the fwd foam to also strengthen the glass from inside my boat. I had a major issue with boat pox which resulted in small hull leaks. Good luck with your endeavor.
