On my mosts recent cruise in the Penobscot Bay area of Maine, my CDI jib furler broke. It wasn't dramatic, and I was able to muddle through and continue the cruise. When I got back home, I investigated, found the cause, ordered some parts, and fixed the problem. (I'm pretty sure.) Then I made a video about it: https://youtu.be/GfcqzaJktb8 Long story short, the bearing at the bottom of the whole assembly deteriorated (old age), which allowed a small but important piece to fall off, which allowed the stainless 'cup' at the bottom to rotate with the rest of the furler, which is not good. I ordered some new parts from CDI (https://www.cdifurlers.com). To the extent I've been able to test it, with the boat on its trailer in my yard, the furler seems to be working better than ever. If you'd like your CDI furler to spin more easily, you might want to consider upgrading to the better bearing even if it's not yet broken.
