Ed, Thanks for thinking of me. I think that a simple snorkel mask will suffice while in the water. Once on land, lifting her off the trailer is not hard (see attached photo at the bottom of email.) The centerboard will be serviced in the spring when I paint the bottom, centerboard and the inside of the cb trunk and the problem(s) will definitely be resolved. Michael, I got my board stuck this summer, too. I used the handle end of a 1/2" breaker bar as a pry bar,and stuck it in the bottom aft end of the centerboard well and pryed it down a little at a time. After it moved about 2" it released and fell about a foot until the pendent got tight.( I gave the pendent a foot of slack before I tried to unstick it In case something went wrong,I didn't want it to free fall all the way down.) I also put part of a pool noodle on the handle of the breaker bar so it would float if I dropped it. The water in my lake is real murky,so I did everything by feel. Michael, Jerry's advice is very good and I am going to keep it in mind for myself. However, if when your Rhodes is rocking and you hear a noticeable bang-bang from the swing keel-centerboard hitting the sides of its housing when in the "full up" position, the main bolt on which it swivels may need tightening to reduce the side to side play in it. This happened to us twice in the last 25 years of sailing our '83. Get out the snorkel or the scuba equipment. "Thor IV" - Lake George NYSee the original archive post

Jerry, In the past, the board usually drops once I get under and lift it a few times. It is almost always some sort of mussel or barnacle that jams it. Moving the board up and down slightly breaks the hold. This year, things seem a bit different. First, there is an unusually large amount of lightly attached mussel growth all over the bottom. There may be quite a colony in the cb trunk. Alternatively, I may have a broken block in the trunk. Alan, My centerboard does not have a bolt. The pivot is a short length of 1" diameter stainless steel pipe that goes through the board and rides in grooves in the fiberglass located on the sides of the trunk. Where is your bolt? Does it penetrate the sides of the cb trunk? How does it seal out water since it is below the waterline?
