Hi Peter,
  Attached is a picture of the tiller/rudder assembly.  There are three wooden blocks sandwiched between the two starboard ends.  Mine look like they haven't been varnished in years.
   While I can't keep the boat at home, it's easy to throw the rudder in the car and work on it in the off-season.  When we get another temperate day I'll pull out the pressure washer and give 'er a go.
