Please be very careful when using bottle jacks. I have seen several Rhodes 22 hulls with very round puncture marks in the lower portions. If you insist on jacking the hull up, please distribute the weight over a large area using soft wood blocks. Instead, I use an A-frame made of a pair of through bolted 4x4x12s and a come-along to the from lifting hook. Make sure that the block behind the front hook is in good condition and that the nuts to the U-bolt are tight.

Hi Peter,

It’s important that you prevent the boat stands from shifting.  Unless you are painting on concrete, I always put plywood under the legs to prevent the stands from sinking into the soil or blacktop.  The boat stands should also come equipped with chains.  You should use these to secure the top of the boat stands together.  As you are lifting and lowering the boat, you may find several pieces of 4x6 wood are useful to use as cribbing to support a corner while you reposition the jack.

Bottom paint is toxic.  Be sure to wear appropriate PPE when you are sanding and painting.
