I thought a little more about your question.  By any chance, by “spreader cups”, are you referring to the stainless steel sockets on the mast that the spreader bars plug into?

On my boat, these sockets are solidly pop riveted and thru bolted to the mast.  If the thru bolt is loose, you may be able to tighten it.  If the pop rivets are loose, they will have to be drilled out and replaced.  Check the fillet weld where the socket attaches to the base plate.  If the weld is cracked; the fitting will have to be removed and then repaired at a weld shop or replaced.

The spreader bar itself is a loose fit into the socket.  This play is necessary when stepping/unstepping the mast.  So, don’t be concerned about a little wiggle in the spreader bar.
